“craft”

A writer works with the tools given to him, much like an artist works with his. When you arrange words, phrases, and sentences for the most effectual way possible to present your ideas, you are working on craft. Certainly, there is a prescribed method or trend during the era in which you are writing, and emulating those who’ve mastered the craft is a good place to start.

However, someone needs to go first with unconventional craft choices. This experimentation–with what works and what doesn’t work for our readers–could be called “making craft choices.” For example, whoever experimented with including dialogue within the nonfiction essay or memoir was making a bold craft choice.
