Love your Job?

As internationals scholars come to live in Columbia, MO, their children dive into our public schools. Most don’t want to leave. Teaching is a wonderful profession. Where else can you hangout with kids and lovable people all day? There aren’t many professions that include relationship building side by side with building knowledge for life with the future citizens of our nation. I believe that teaching elementary students is delightful with its hugs, laughter and times of celebrations.

First of all, I don’t know how many hugs I get in one week. I would guess it’s at least five per day. When I go into the third grade classroom across the hall form my room, I’m welcomed exuberantly. Who can resist? I reach out and side-hug my fans. What’s more, I’m sure my breathing relaxes, and my blood pressure lowers.

Second, the laughter fills the halls an corners of the classrooms as we laugh at our own mistakes in spelling contests, think up funny stories in writing class or dress up on Spirit Days. In our halls, we’ve not only had 1930s gangsters and pirates running around, there have been magical fairies (those were the second grade teachers) elves, and martians as well.

Last, there are lots of celebrations. For example, when we meet our reading goals and our positive behavior rewards reach six digits there are popcorn parties with juice and high-fives in the gym. When our attendance is consistent we might have a movie or read with the lights off with our flashlights in our socks.

Finally, I’ve come to the conclusion that I love teaching elementary school. Even though teaching at the university had its perks, I think the elementary school is by far the most enjoyable job setting I’ve ever experienced. I hope you will build your professional career in the world of children. You will find them waiting for you with open arms.
